Printing Online Course Materials

Online course materials (WWW) are advantageous in many ways. The courses are easily kept current. In Computing Information Systems it is critical to be learning relevant information in an ever changing field. Online course materials make it possible for courses to share materials. This method also allows those with a preference for print based materials to have hard copies. Should you choose to print all or parts of your course, we offer the following hints and suggestions.

  1. As a first step, get a good overview of the course online.
  2. Do NOT print everything.
  3. If you feel you need to have hard copy, we suggest you print only the part of the course you are studying. When you move on, staple that section, and devise an organizational system for the paper as it accumulates - ie. A three ring binder.
  4. Have Notepad, or other editor, open where you can cut and paste important points from your online course material and save on your hard drive.

Printing your WWW Course Pages from your Browser

To save and print page(s) you want in hard copy click on the pull down menu under "File". Under 'File' in the top menu bar of your browser, the pull-down menu will have three print-related options:

  1. Click "Page Setup" and use the dialogue box to select page margins, numbering, border types, and other information to include when printing. (This is not necessary.)
  2. Click "Print", and click "OK" in the dialogue box to print out a web page (be sure your printer is online first).
  3. Click "Print Preview" to see what the current web page will look like printed (before you actually print it).

Hints

If your printer does not print the links, set the links' color to black in your browser's Preferences, "Colors", and then change them back to blue when done printing.

Layout and Ordering of Web Pages

Web pages are designed sequentially and logically. When printing course materials, print the Cover Page, (Table of Contents) and print linked pages in the order they occur on the screen.

For example:

  1. Print the "Study Guide" Table of Contents
  2. Click Unit 1 and print that page
  3. Click on "Introduction" and print.
  4. Click on Section 1 link and print

Printing your WWW Course Pages using Copy and Paste and a Text Editor

A quick method to print the studyguide, and related materials, is to start at the first page of the Web materials, highlight all of the text, and then select "edit", and then "copy" from your browser's toolbar. Next open Notepad, and select "edit" and "paste" from the Notepad toolbar. Print this page, and then go back to the next page of the studyguide, and do the same thing. Continue this until you have printed off all of the pages you wish to.
